Dare

Dare: Dare is also called a semi modal as it can be used as main verb as well as a modal verb.

Use of Dare:

1. In the affirmative dare is used like a main verb, i.e. daredares in the Present, dared in the Past tense.  But in the negative and interrogative, it can be used either like a main verb or like a modal auxiliary,   i.e. it is semi modal.  e.g.

   (a) He dares to oppose you.

   (b) He does not dare to oppose you.

   (c) He dare not say like this.

   (d) I dare not talk to the chairman.

   (e) Dare he not say like this?

   (f) Dare I talk to the chairman?

The ordinary verb construction is more commonly used.

2. The constructions how dare you / he / they, expresses indignation. e.g.

    (a) How dare you speak like this? (I am indignant because you spoke like this).

    (b) How dare my wife leave without my permission?
